JMC Starbug

By Ian Crichton

THis is my 1/48 scale Starbug, half the size of the big effects models on "Red Dwarf". All these pictures were taken in bright British Sunshine(!), with an Olympus c-3040z. Since finishing this model I have made a master for a proposed garage kit at about 6" (not produced out of sheer laziness).

Having got the sizing from the now defunct Red Dwarf Smegazine, I converted the measurements for the 3 spheres (8", 10" and 14") by simply making inches into centimetres, (oh, the joy of being educated in Imperial AND metric!). I then acquired a pair of 14cm hemispheres from EMA, and used two clear Christmas baubles from a craft shop, which by chance were the correct dimensions.

Two weeks of spare time, car body filler, styrene sheet, kit bashing, lathe turning and silicone moulding later, it was time to paint the beast. Luckily I also do this for a living, and so have access to a well-equipped spray booth. Then it was time to fit the halogen lamps in the engines, and the two 12 volt bulbs for the cockpit and headlamps. Rub down decals from a company called 4D, based in London, whom I recommend for your entire model making needs, a little, well, a LOT, of airbrush weathering, and hey presto, a nice illuminated model to gather dust on a shelf.
