Starfuries

By Don Bowers

Pictured here is the Revell-Monogram "Babylon 5 Starfury MK1" model kit. The model with Sinclair's markings was assembled with a combination of Testors liquid cement and Tenax glues. All filling was done with Automotive Glazing Putty, which I find doesn't shrink up like the hobby-shop brands, and requires fewer applications. The ship was airbrushed in Model Master colors (I didn't go for accuracy...just whatever looked "cool"). All the weathering was done with a Q-Tip and various chalk pastels. The engines were painted flat black, then drybrushed heavily with Citadel acrylic paints. The only modification to the kit was the gun barrels. I cut off the originals and replaced them with Evergreen tubing, then filled in all the large (awful) gaps with sheet plastic.

The ship with the "Wiley Coyote" nose-art was the first Starfury I assembled. It was straight out of the box, except for the image of Acme's best customer. That was drawn in with rapidograph pen, then colored in with Citadel acrylics. I just started with the lighter colors first, then worked my way darker.
