Gerry Anderson Arrowhead

By David Womby

Gerry Anderson's Stingray show has not received the same attention from the model manufacturers - major players or cottage industry - as his later shows Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, UFO and Space 1999. There are various kits of Stingray itself and I have seen references to kits of the Terrorfish and X-20's submarine.

However, when I found Simon Wickes' and Marc Frattasio's websites and read how many of GA's models were built from then available kits, I tried my hand at a WASP Arrowhead Fighter, built the way the original TV model was built.

Take any F-5A kit, in my case a 1/72 from PM Models that cost me $2 at a show, and adapt as follows:
  • move wings to rear and place tailplanes where the intakes should be
  • put the intakes under the rear fuselage
  • place the two large bombs on pylons each side of the fuselage
  • paint as shown

Not hard to do and creates a pretty unique model. The hardest part for me was finding checkered decal for the port wing markings and making sure the markings on the top and bottom of the wing matched up.

Similarly easy would be a WASP Spearhead Jet from a B-58 kit. Try it.
