USS Akira |

Probably one of the most popular designs that came from the movie ST First Contact was the Akira design. Unique and very streamlined, the design is somewhat of a departure from the usual configuration. It's low profile makes it suitable for combat and certainly was instrumental in many battles involving the Borg and the Dominion. Estimated to measure nearly 400m in length, this ship is large and heavily armed with the latest in phaser and photon torpedo technology. This replica was constructed from the Starcraft Models resin kit. The kit is nicely made and the details are crisp. I was fortunate that my kit didn't have significant surface defects that can be common with resin kits. I must note that I have had nothing but positive experiences with Starcraft kits and I can wholeheartedly recommend them. This kit is simple to build coming with 5 pieces to put together. Most of your time is really taken up by painting. Even that isn't too complicated. I simply washed the pieces with Comet to clear off the oily surface residue. Primed it with Krylon Gray primer and then applied Model Master Light Gray as the base color. |
I used Ghost gray and Dark Ghost gray for the accents on the hull. Light Blue was used for the warp nacelles and red for the bussard collectors. Overall this makes a very nice miniature. It definitely is one of my favorites and I do recommend this kit. The only challenge was fitting the piece that lies between both warp engines. Other than that it was pretty straight forward. The other thing I have fun with is using adobe photodeluxe to make interesting images. Image: Bottom Image: Front/top Image: Port side |
