NX 01A USS Dauntless - Dauntless class

By Aviel Tochterman

Scale ~ 1:1,250 (It's almost in scale with the Voyager from the 3 piece set)

Model size

  • Length: 32 cm
  • Height: 4 cm
  • Width: 11 cm

    Modeling process

I downloaded a 3D mesh from the net, sliced it to horizontal layers, in thickness corresponding the material I was about to use. Then I printed the slices and glued them on a 1 cm thick kappa sheet (it is a 100x70 cm white foamed styrene sheet covered on both sides with thick paper sheets, and comes in variable thickness), and cut the shapes out. I Glued the layers together to get a 'topographic' model, and filled the 'slopes' with instant papier maché. After seeing the episode (Voyager - 'Hope and fear') again, I realised the nacelles are way too long, so I shortened and re-modeled them. Unfortunately for me, the 3D mesh was not entirely correct, and there weren't any good schematics back then, so my model is not too accurate.

    Paint job

Basic coat of grey primer to seal & detect any defects, and then darker grey spray as generic hull color. All details (hull markings, escape pods, etc.) were hand painted with a fine 000 brush, acoording to good schematics I found on the web (of course, by Murphy's law, it was a long time after finished the model itself…).
  • For the lighted parts, I primarily painted the areas with silvery-chrome paint, and then covered them with clear glazing paint. The blue parts were done with light blue with a stripe of darker blue in the fornt & upper parts of the area. The windows were painted pale banana paint which I realized long time ago it gives a nice apperance of windows, but not as dead as white paint.

When the basic color & grid lines were done, I painted random sized & shaped orthogonal panels with glossy cote, and dry-brushed the entire model.

    Stand

The stand is a bought resin cast stand, which I decided to give a somewhat more threatening look. To do so, I painted it overall coal black, highlighted the egdes with gold/brass paint & added random horizontal & vertical lines in glossy black, representing the Borg threat.
