Space Ark |

This model is made from the old Lunar Models ark kit I had purchased eons ago. The only part I used from that kit is the fuselage. Everything else is scratch built. The wings and fins were redesigned (they were way off) as was the rocket sled and tracks. Using screen caps from the DVD and internet research, I was able to correct the rocket fin parts and also build the track section more accurately. All the fin parts were carved out of 1/8" thick clear plex as I wanted them to be ridged. The heavy resin fuselage supported on thin rear fins made out of styrene would probably have drooped in a few years time. The six rocket motors under each wing were also carved out of plex tubing. The model is painted in Tamiya flat aluminum. The rocket sled was made out of styrene and the six rocket motors in the lower area are ABS tubes with Plastruct end caps. It was painted in Tamiya acrylics and weathered with oil washes. The base and track were probably the most enjoyable part of this project. The base was made from my standard 3/4" MDF center with poplar frame. The ground work is a piece of foam carved into shape with sculpting tools. The "cement" track supports are made up of laminated 1/8" styrene and the tracks are also styrene. The track and supports were built up as a unit and then painted and added to the base. The groundwork is standard Woodland Scenics foliage and the river bed was filled with clear "water" resin, tinted green. The tracks and base were painted with acrylics and oil washes were added to highlight the details. Image: Top/rear view Image: Track and supports Image: View from the ground |
