ESS Odin (BSS-1) |

Scale: None stated This vessel began life as a wooden board 2"x2"x6' purchased from a store I worked at when I built it. I had been picking up and bringing home a lot of trashed and short pieces of wood the store was getting rid of. With the help of a friend who had a band saw, I cut out the main lower deck and built up the ship from there. The main deck measured two feet long by six inches wide. Many of the cut-off pieces were then trimmed down and used to make the main body. Most of the pieces are held together with simple wood glue, with small nails to help hold down the main deck. From that point, I simply went through my collection of saved scrap lumber, and when I found pieces that I felt looked right, I trimmed them as necessary and glued to the model. This process went on for about a week (allowing the glue to dry completely), off and on. The aft end was then sanded down and a large amount of wood putty was used to fill in several odd surfaces and to give it the overall smooth appearance. Then I sanded all this down to make a smooth transition from putty to wood. I painted the Odin completely blue, with various other colors added to break up the field a bit. The red lines in front are part pf fighter bay cover when closed. The white tip serves as a beacon for the ship's craft. The name was decided upon for the ease of painting it on with a toothpick. All paints used were for indoor use; water based for easy clean up all around. This model was the tenth ship I built out of the same materials mentioned above. My shipyard has completed over 100 such projects since I started back in 1987. |
