Scale: 1/72 History Original conceived in the late 1950's and early 1960's was the need to place man into a Space Station in Low Earth Orbit [LEO]. USAF MOL was based upon an modified Atlas D launch vehicle. The Atlas D was launched into orbit and then fabricated into the Space Station. Clusters could be assembled to make a larger living space, and serve as the jumping off point for Moon and Mars Manned Exploration Missions. This was to be a separate program from NASA. The Model I must confess, this model was not built for competition - I could not resist sharing one of my prized models from my childhood. I built it as a space age kid in the mid 60's when the kit was produced. These pictures show the model as a Modified Atlas D in 1/72 scale, complete with two orbital spacecraft, and the various astronauts in place. The MOL shows a ward room, an operations room and a bathroom (in the nose section). Image: Color view, top/front Image: Front view (B&W) |
